A large, easy to grow attractive shrub with multiple uses. Bright green foliage adds a coarse texture landscapes. Large umbels of creamy flowers bloom from spring through late summer and turn into showy dark berries with a white wax coating that makes them appear blue at a distance. Berries can be cooked and made into preserves but should not be eaten raw. Birds enjoy the berries as well and use the dense foliage as shelter and nesting locations. Grows well in riparian areas or grasslands and can help restore mountain areas to prevent erosion. Native to cool areas of the western North America.
