Mid to large shrub that quickly forms thickets of bright green, lance-shaped leaves. Found in riparian areas along riverbanks or as an understory plant near cottonwood trees. A preferred food source for beavers, elk, and moose and a great habitat for songbirds and small mammals. Spring catkins are an important early source of food for native bees. Generally used to stabilize soil and prevent erosion along waterways.
