New Mexico Locust

Robinia neomexicana

New Mexico Locust

Currently unavailable

Native to Southern Utah and a member of the pea family, with attractive purple flowers in summer. Rather adaptive, its size depends on environmental conditions. Roots are prolific and suckering, creating thick stands in moist, sunny locations or withstanding drought and heat in rocky, dry conditions. Can grow to be a tree up to 30' or just a shrub around 8'. Often found growing alongside Gambel oak. Highly attractive to pollinators like hummingbirds. While foliage and flowers are a favorite to wildlife and cattle, the seeds are highly toxic to humans. Stronger wood than Robinia pseudoacacia with more thorns. Great for erosion control.
