This conifer prefers cooler climates and well-drained soils in full sun, though it can tolerate some shade. Young trees need consistent moisture, while mature specimens become more drought-tolerant. Its dense, pyramidal form features horizontal branches that extend to the ground, with lower branches drooping as the tree ages. Blue spruce is often used as a Christmas tree, although the needles are very prickly.
