Curled fan-like bright green leaves begin turning red at the tips in the heat of summer. The vibrant red creeps inward and by fall these Mukdenia are a show stopper of colors. It has a low, spreading mound habit. Best grown in moist, fertile, well-drained soils in part shade. Tolerates full sun in the northern part of its growing range. However, plants often struggle in the hot and humid summers of the deep South where they appreciate afternoon shade or sun dappled shade. If grown in full sun, consistent moisture is important.
