This deciduous conifer features a pyramidal shape that becomes flat-topped as it matures. The needles are found in opposite pairs, around half an inch long, straight or slightly curved, with bright green tops and lighter green undersides and turn to bronze in autumn before falling. The bark starts as reddish-brown when young, darkening and developing fissures, eventually peeling in strips as it matures.
