A nearly maintenance-free perennial, it offers an abundance of rose-pink flowers with a delightful vanilla scent, arranged in dense clusters from midsummer through early fall. To encourage another round of blooming, simply remove spent flowers, which typically occurs about a month after the first flush. The flowers, teeming with nectar and pollen, exert a strong allure to hummingbirds, butterflies, bees, and other beneficial insects. Throughout the summer, you can consistently gather bouquets of Asclepias. Its lengthy stems are perfect for cutting and have a long vase life. To prevent the milky sap from oozing out, briefly sear the ends of the cut stems over an open flame. After the splendid floral display, the characteristic milkweed seedpods mature, eventually splitting open to release seeds adorned with lengthy, silky, silvery-white hairs. These make for wonderful additions to dried flower arrangements.
